Vintage Styling in the Short Films of Terri Timely

Wonderful, word of mouth is. A customer in my brick and mortar store just pointed me in the direction of Terri Timely, the production company of Bay Area filmmakers Ian Kibbey and Corey Creasey. The directors, as well as production designer Na Young Kim, obviously have a love of retro interiors and furniture, and have a knack for creating intimacy with those belovede obects and settings.

Their latest short. Synesthesia, explores seemingly unmatched sensory responses.

 

I loved the whimsical series of advertisements they created for SAP/the French Government:

 

And in this video for Joanna Newsom's The Sprout and the Bean, Newsom is a Gunne Sax clad muse in a dusty classroom with an animated chalkboard.

I just had to share these incredibly whimsical 1940s evening shoes with a sweet little surprise - a birdcage heel complete with bird. Adorable!

Mad Men returns tonight for season 4, and even the characters are getting excited.

Twitter, of course. In one of the most brilliantly ironic twists in modern media marketing, AMCtv has embraced modern social media in order to promote its most successful period drama. The office may be stocked with IBM Selectric typewriters and dictaphones, but you can follow your favorite mad men characters on Twitter, and support their new business venture by "like"-ing them on Facebook. Could any of the creative people at Sterling Cooper Draper Price have conceived of something so far-fetched as the internet? Watch and see....

The Alfred Shaheen Experience at Glamoursplash

It's true. As a blogger sometimes I'm a big phony slacker, and at such times I find it necessary to draw your attention elsewhere. Glamoursplash, for instance, where my BFF and birthday sister Pam has been blogging up a storm on accounta the fact that a major Alfred Shaheen fashion retrospective has hit the her glittering, glamourous metropolis. An exhibit, mind you, that I have yet to get offa my hiney and see, and which, if I miss it, it will be because I'm a stressed-out super busy single mom and not an actual slacker.

One of the most iconic musical moments of the Twentieth Century happened 48 years ago this week. Life magazine photographer Bill Ray recounts his night behind the scenes at the star-studded birthday party/convention the night Marilyn sang to Kennedy, and shares his previously unpublished photos.

Vintage in New York & Around the World

From Search and Destroy to Chelsea Girl, New York has long been known for its wide selection of vintage and second-hand designer clothing. New York Times contributor Sarah Maslin recently took a glimpse at what's available in the Big Apple, and put together a slideshow of her favorites.

Maslin is savvy enough to make the distinction between the different types of stores:

"Shops come in several varieties. Some thrift shops are run for profit and some donate proceeds to a particular charity and are run by volunteers. Then there are vintage shops, specializing in retro clothing, often from a spectrum of eras. Finally there are consignment stores, where owners drop off their unwanted clothing to be sold, sharing a percentage of the profit with the store’s proprietor."

Being an educated buyer gets you halfway to finding what you're looking for when out treasure hunting. It's not all "thrifting," folks. Not everyone will be lucky enough to unearth a Pucci dress from a $5 pile. But as Maslin found out, once you find your needle in the haystack you'll be a second hand shopper forever!

Readers were asked to submit photos of their favorite vintage finds, and the resulting slideshow is a wonderful trip into the closets of vintage lovers all over the globe.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

A Flickr group has formed in celebration of the stupendous hat worn by the distinguished Ms. Aretha Franklin at the inauguration of our new president. 

Images of the hat (like the above, by flickr user aprilwinchell)appear on famous faces, pets, self portraits, and in some unlikely places like Mount Rushmore, and on Michaelangelo's David (covering up the sweet bits.) Enjoy.
