Last Thursday in Manchester, New Hampshire, the International Fantasy Hair Competition was held, with proceeds going to the New Hampshire Food Bank. In the spirit of San Francisco's Beach Blanket Babylon, enormous follicular creations were piled on top of women's heads. For charity.
"In the final minutes before the show began, stone-faced stylists put the finishing touches on their chicken-wired and pomaded masterpieces. What emerged from the piles of discarded Styrofoam clods and noxious clouds of hairspray were divas with heads decked out in pink lilies, forests of furry trees, and coifs of cotton candy." I'm always interested in the over-the-top fantasy that fashion can become, the art, (see my post about shoes) and this hair show was no exception. The best part? Ms. Alternative Energy, Ms. Global Warming, Engaging Green, all fantasy hair creations that emphasize our need for environmental awareness. I mean seriously, what better way to express concern for our planet than to create massive wearable sculptures out of human and synthetic hair and tons of hairspray, wire and glue? Perfect!
